Welcome to the Crook County Museum!

Come see the Black Hills of North Eastern Wyoming.  History doesn’t have a state line; the historical aspects of the west can be seen in the Crook County Museum & Art Gallery in picturesque Sundance, Wyoming right off of interstate 90. The History of Crook County is depicted in the many dioramas and exhibits, over 7000 artifacts, which are housed in the historic stone school house known as Old Stoney.  

Immerse yourself in the rich history and cultural heritage of northeastern Wyoming at the Crook County Museum. Located in the heart of Sundance, this museum offers a captivating collection of artifacts, exhibits, and stories that bring the past to life. The Sundance Kid was also in our County Jail in 1887 for stealing a local rancher’s horse and pistol, this is where Harry Longabough (aka Sundance Kid) got his nickname.

Hours of Operation:

  • Monday to Friday: 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM
  • Saturday and Sunday: 9:00 AM - 3:00 PM

Admission:

  • Adults: $5.00
  • Children (under 12): Free
  • Group rates and guided tours are available upon request.

Directions:

  • From I-90, take exit 185 and head south on US-14 for approximately 1 mile.
  • The museum is located in the center of Sundance, easily accessible and well-marked with signs.

Exhibits and Collections

The original court room from 1884 is on display in one of our permanent exhibits along with the Sundance Kid exhibit, also the gun exhibit is phenomenal. Experience a walk through time in the replica barn and stable with its buggy and work tools. Glance in the bunk house that has all the amenities a cowboy bachelor could want. Listen for the sounds of stampeding buffalo hooves as you look at the Vore Buffalo Jump diorama with all its grand archeology discoveries.   Go on an adventure of a lifetime with Custer and his men as they trek through the Black Hills in the Expedition of 1874. Follow the trails and the tribulations of his men as they fight for survival against nature, the illicit miners, and the natives. Explore Moses Annenberg’s great hideaway locally know as Ranch A. When he was looking for a quiet place to relax and a place to throw some great parties for his fellow city dudes he would come to the isolation of the Black Hills and go to his local canyon ranch to kick up his heels.   

1878 Gift Shop & Gallery

The 1875 Gift & Gallery has the best regional art for sale from bronze sculpture, colored pencil, water color, photography, collage, hand formed jewelry, pottery, and oils.  The 1875 Gift & Gallery has art from wildlife, still lifes, interpretive, conceptual, and functional. This museum & art gallery has it all and something for everyone. The 1875 Gift & Gallery was formed to give our local artists a place to sell and show and give others a chance to be exposed to the art world.
